Google launches free online classes to help you learn better internet search skills

Posted on 12:15 by Unknown

Google is having a lot of announcements today at the Google I/O conference with lots of updates and new products. (Go to Android Central to get updates on all the news).

But yesterday they announced something that is a great resource for educators and students alike. "Power Searching with Google" is a free, online community based course that helps participants learn how to do better searches and use some of the cool features of Google, such as using the search box as a calculator and finding data right from the search box itself.

The course contains six 50-minute classes, interactive activities to practice your new skills, community integration and connections with Google Groups, Google+, and Hangouts on Air (with search experts) and Googlers will be available to help. You can even get a printable Certificate of Completion upon passing the post course assessment.

Lessons will be released daily starting on July 10th and participants can take them on their own schedule during a 2 week window.

Registration is open from June 26, 2012 to July 16, 2012. We recommend that you register before the first class is released on July 10, 2012!
New classes will become available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday starting on July 10, 2012 and ending on July 19, 2012.
Course-related activities will end on July 23, 2012.
Teachers can take the course and then share what they learn with their students next school year.

You can also go to the Google Inside Search page for other tips and help with better searching that can be used by students and educators.

Udemy - take or create your own online course

Posted on 06:06 by Unknown

Udemy is a site that enables anyone to take and build courses online. It is free to sign up and there are both free and paid courses available. You can also create your own online course on the site.

It's very easy to use, and there are some great features. You pick a subject, title the course and describe it, upload videos, audio files, PowerPoints, PDF files, documents and more, import media, organize everything with a drag-and-drop interface and then publish the course. There are social media widgets and you can interact with students through a discussion board on the class.

Topics for courses include: technology, business, design, social sciences, math, science, humanities, arts and much more.

This is a great resource for finding courses to learn something new, review material, or to create an online course for your students. Students could also use it to create a short course as a class project.

MIT and Harvard are teaming up on edX to offer free, online, interactive courses. edX will have online discussion groups, collaborative course wikis and other interactive tools to take it beyond just watching a video. Students who compete courses will get a certificate from edX.

About edX

EdX is a joint partnership between The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University to offer online learning to millions of people around the world. EdX will offer Harvard and MIT classes online for free. Through this partnership, the institutions aim to extend their collective reach to build a global community of online learners and to improve education for everyone.
MIT’s Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Anant Agarwal serves as the first president of edX, and Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean Michael D. Smith leads faculty in developing courses. Along with offering online courses, the institutions will use edX to research how students learn and how technology can facilitate teaching—both on-campus and online.

An open-source online learning platform that will feature teaching designed specifically for the web. Features will include: self-paced learning, online discussion groups, wiki-based collaborative learning, assessment of learning as a student progresses through a course, and online laboratories. The platform will also serve as a laboratory from which data will be gathered to better understand how students learn. Because it is open source, the platform will be continuously improved.

edX will be run on an open-source learning platform with self-paced learning, discussions groups, wiki's, learning assessments and online labs.

More information will be coming in the future, including course offerings.
